While Bill Bowerman's name might not ring out as loud as some other Nike big-wigs, the co-founder is very much an icon in his own right. Bill Bowerman, a track coach at the University of Oregon who spawned a revolution in athletic footwear and America's jogging boom while helping a wordlwide marketing powerhouse as a co-founder of Nike.
Bowerman is a game changer because he not only coached 44 all-Americans and 19 Olympians, but he also created a lighter, faster shoe to run in. Bowerman wanted to have his track team focus and succeed so he thought of making a light and faster shoe for his athletic teams. He paired up with Phil Knight, also another co-founder, and worked with Knight to create the perfect shoe for all athletics to wear and use. Today, his name may not be mentioned to you but he took the ideas similar to the Japanese shoe and recreated it. Although Knight bought shoes from Japan and spread it worldwide over the U.S., Bowerman also created his own waffle-sole shoe without the idea from the Japanese. Bowerman basically took the idea of the Japanese shoe and focused on making it a better pair and poplarizing himself on the making of the Nike shoe. He made his Nike shoes so that the waffle -sole bottom was made of foam and rubber so that the shoes slightly bounces the runner of the ground. He tested the shoe so that it bounces the runner a certian height off the ground. Bowerman made the rubber thick enough so that it bounces any runner about an inch alone off the ground. Imagine if Bill Bowerman never thought of the idea of making a light and faster shoe. We would all be carrying about and extra two to five pounds on our feet. He changed the world by giving the everyone the springy shoe of the Nike Co. Bill was so focused on having his team succees until he realized what his shoes could do for the world. Today, Nike shos are used all over the world and it is a big thanks to Bill Bowerman for helping us run faster without using much energy. If the world still had the old-fashioned shoes we wouldn't be running as fast as we are today. At first Bill decided to only have two colors to the Nike shoe, white and black. In 1978, Bill changed the color of the Nike shoe to blue and yellow. Bowerman is a big game changer to the world. He made us the first lightest and fastest shoe. The first Nike shoe ever made by Bill Bowerman is stil standing on its podium at the Track and Field Hall of Fame in Fossil, Oregon. He really changed history, with Phil Knight, with the first Nike shoe.
